NOTES: Written in response to a tv_100  prompt, lies.

Barney lies all the time.

He lies to women to sleep with them, he lies to clients at work every day, he even lies to his friends sometimes. He’s a regular dealer in false promises, whether it’s pretending to be a sports star who can get a girl tickets to the game the next day, or swearing to the Portuguese government that he knew nothing about their water problems. Even when he does something like help Marshall and Lily get back together, he’d rather lie and pretend it never happened than actually admit to helping out.

But there’s no one he lies more to than himself. Since the messy breakup with Shannon, he’s spent years pretending that he’s completely recovered from the damage that rejection did to him. Being incapable of having a relationship longer than a fling surely has nothing to do with it.

And then he had to fall in love with Robin. He was so immature the last time he felt so strongly about any woman, and he regresses back to that old him in some ways, unable to handle all these feelings. He’s been so sexually in control for years and it’s terrifying to feel so helpless now. He hates it, and sometimes he hates Robin for doing this to him, so he goes out and sleeps with other women. But then he sees her, and the love hits him full force again.

He can’t lie to himself anymore:  he’s in love with Robin.
